Project Summary
ThinqStudio, CU Denver’s digital pedagogy studio, is a small office space with a professional audio recording setup. I found out about it the way most people don’t: I needed somewhere to record audio with 19 Mandela Washington Fellows, and Brad Hinson, the director of The Learning Agency, mentioned ThinqStudio might work. I learned the equipment as I went. It surprised me how little the space was used, given the gear available there, and the studio’s director, Dr. Dennis DeBay, confirmed that many faculty and students didn’t know the studio or its equipment were available to them. I also recommended specific equipment to raise the studio’s production quality, much of it gear I use myself; Dennis approved the recommendation, and where items were outside the budget, we found alternatives that met the same need at a lower cost. I built this self-paced Rise 360 course through The Learning Agency so faculty and students could learn the studio’s equipment and software on their own schedule and walk in ready to record.
The course walks learners through producing podcast audio step by step, from the studio’s audio equipment to its recording software, with defined learning outcomes and custom quizzes to check understanding along the way. This project also put me on both sides of the design table: I was the instructional designer and, drawing on my background in audio production, the subject-matter expert who wrote the quiz content.
